“How It Works” Marketing Brochures

A collage of brochures for Tactile Medical, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

When it comes to informing and engaging prospective patients with educational materials — like this series of “How It Works” brochures — Tactile Medical often calls on Carolyn to help.

Tactile Medical’s Flexitouch® Plus is an advanced pneumatic compression system. It works by sequentially inflating and deflating chambers to create a gentle, wave-like motion that directs lymph fluid from the impaired area toward healthy regions of the body. The fluid is then naturally absorbed and processed by the body. The Flexitouch is designed for at-home treatment of lymphedema, chronic edema, chronic venous insufficiency, and chronic wounds.

To show prospective Flexitouch Plus users how the upper extremity, lower extremity and head and neck systems work, Carolyn designed a series of brochures that included illustrations outlining Flexitouch’s sequential inflation process and various program options.

Tactile Medical has been one of Carolyn’s many long-term clients. Over the past ten years, Carolyn has helped with marketing materials, technical forms, booth graphics, meeting materials, packaging and more.

Rhythmia iPad App

Eight sample pages from Boston Scientific's Rhythmia iPad App, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

When Boston Scientific wanted an interactive iPad app their sales force could use to show features of their high-resolution RHYTHMIA™ heart mapping system, they reached out to Carolyn for help.

RHYTHMIA allowed cardiologists to see an unprecedented level of detail: 25x the detail at 6x the speed. The app contained five categories of content: an overview of the RHYTHMIA System, a section where viewers could dig deeper into RHYTHMIA System features, clinical data, user testimonials, and a section with links to additional materials such as brochures and spec sheets.

The iPad app was rich with interactivity: pop-ups, interactive sample monitor screens, video testimonials, and side-by-side case studies. These components helped provide an educational and engaging user experience.

Close up teaser image showing detail of materials designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. for St. Kate's fundraising collateral

Fundraising Materials

A collage of pages designed to support St. Kate's annual fundraising materials, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

The challenge presented by St. Catherine University (previously named The College of St. Catherine; still affectionately referred to as St. Kate’s) was to update materials used by the team of paid student fundraisers.

The suite of fundraising materials would be used by students when reaching out to alumnae. Forms included space to track conversations, pledges, payment history, and other information relevant to the initiative. The materials needed to be highly modular and work with the pre-programmed computer systems; a complicating request was that the client also wanted the materials to be more personalized than previous materials had ever been.

The design solution included iconic images from campus, along with a space for a new element: a student photo. The photo was a way to reinforce a personal connection between the alumnae and the student. Student photos included a first name and information on their major. To economize, all materials (except the digitally printed photo) were offset printed in two colors.

“It was our most successful year ever. The final numbers aren’t in but we are already far ahead of where we’ve been … I know our excellent materials made a huge difference. I continue to be incredibly pleased with your work and professionalism. I really enjoy your style.”

– ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, ANNUAL FUND, ST. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY

Close up teaser image in an architectural blueprint style showing hardware tools; the illustration was used in a marketing brochure designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. for Travelers Insurance

Salesforce Communication Materials

Sample layouts of a sales rep toolkit for Travelers Insurance, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. The kit appears like a red metal tool box but held brochures and other informational literature.

When Travelers Insurance wanted to communicate features and benefits of new sales and marketing toolkit available to independent agents, they called on Carolyn to help.

The new tools were designed to help agents attract new customers, retain existing clients, promote their agency, find and order marketing materials, and get to know Travelers better.

The challenge presented to Carolyn was to design an attention-grabbing direct mail promotion that would engage agents and educate them on this new toolkit. The mailing envelope was designed to look like a red metal toolbox. Inside, agents found a custom-designed notepad and a brochure that outlined the new marketing tools. A blueprint-like pattern with technical drawings of a hammer, ruler, plier, wrench, bolts, screws, a screwdriver and the saying, “A great set of tools makes any job easier,” was used throughout. Bright colors and copy that reinforced the toolkit message helped make the promotion a success.

Close up teaser image showing EQUANOX oximetry device and headline "The next generation. For the next generation." designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. for Nonin, Inc.

Medical Device Brochure

Sample layouts from a brochure promoting the EQUANIX oximetry lead by Nonin, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

When the client’s go-to graphic designer was unavailable due to a family emergency, Carolyn was brought in to pinch-hit the design of a high-profile product brochure.

Nonin’s innovative oximetry sensors, including the EQUANOX sensor (part of the SenSmart® Universal Oximetry System), provides accurate cerebral tissue oxygen values. Nonin’s noninvasive sensors are ideal for fragile patients such as premie and newborn babies.

Carolyn was hired because it was critical to work with a graphic designer who could hit the ground running. After an initial meeting with the client, Carolyn developed concepts for the visual direction, and soon after directed a product photo shoot. In short order the entire brochure was designed, proofed, reviewed by legal, prepared for the printer, and ready for the company to use.

An animated gif of the cover of a brochure for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's "Magic of Music" fundraising event, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. The animation toggles between the words "Magic" and "Music" and the hands alternate between holding a magician's wand and a conductor's baton.

“Magic of Music” Fundraising Event Materials

A collage of materials from the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's "Magic of Music" fundraising event, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

Renowned for artistic excellence, versatility of musical styles and adventurous programming, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is widely regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world. Each spring (prior to COVID), the Orchestra held a black-tie fundraising gala. The year’s theme: magic.

Carolyn began by interviewing a local magician. She used what she learned to develop a lively design solution that was applied to all event materials. The primary visual was a magicians’s wand that — through the magic of a lenticular — morphed into a conductor’s baton.

Event materials were printed in two colors to economize on print expenses. Materials included pre-event awareness materials, the event invitation package, the evening’s program — which even included directions for a magic trick attendees could attempt using their dinner napkin, a salt shaker and a coin — menu, auction catalog cover and event signage.

Close up teaser image of two hands holding an iPad showing an interior page of the EL ICD app, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. for Boston Scientific

EL-ICD iPad App

Six sample pages from Boston Scientific's EL-ICD iPad App, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

When Boston Scientific wanted help creating an iPad app to promote their industry-leading EnduraLife™ implantable cardioverter defibrillator (EL ICD), they called on Carolyn to help.

Boston Scientific’s EL battery technology delivers the longest projected longevity, and is packaged in a device up to 11 percent smaller and 24 percent thinner than devices from other manufacturers. Increased longevity can reduce the risk of infection and other complications over time, minimize out-of-pocket patient expenses for replacement procedures, and decrease healthcare costs associated with device therapy.

The iPad app includes sections on the EnduraLife battery technology, battery performance studies, and device features such as remote monitoring.

A fun feature: the client wanted to include a 360˚ animation of the device. With the swipe of a finger, users could spin the EL device left, right, or all the way around (to look at the device, or just to play). The feature was created using a sequence of product images shot on a turntable at 10˚ increments.

Board Member Retirement Gift

Photo of a custom silk-wrapped case for retiring board member; designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. and printed/constructed by Kent Aldrich of The Nomadic Press.

When Travelers Insurance contacted Carolyn to design a one-of-a-kind gift for a retiring board member, she immediately knew who she wanted to collaborate with: Kent Aldrich of The Nomadic Press.

Travelers’ request was to give the retiring board member a gift he would be proud to display for the rest of his life —but they didn’t know what they wanted the gift to look like or what they wanted it to say. Carolyn presented a number of detailed concept sketches to the Travelers Corporate Communications team. Once a design direction was approved, Carolyn and Kent selected materials, then Kent began the construction process while Carolyn worked with the client to refine content.

The result was a museum-quality piece comprised of a silk-wrapped case, a letterpress printed proclamation embossed with the corporate seal, and a hard-cover book that outlined notable milestones during the board member’s 17-year tenure. The proclamation, book, and case were crafted of the highest quality materials: hand-marbled paper, silk, leather, and aluminum.

Fun fact: The team at Travelers reached out to Carolyn because Carolyn and Kent had collaborated years earlier on a similar type of bespoke proclamation. That proclamation had been presented to Nelson Mandela on behalf of a coalition of Minnesota businesses.
