An animated gif of the cover of a brochure for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's "Magic of Music" fundraising event, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. The animation toggles between the words "Magic" and "Music" and the hands alternate between holding a magician's wand and a conductor's baton.

“Magic of Music” Fundraising Event Materials

A collage of materials from the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's "Magic of Music" fundraising event, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

Renowned for artistic excellence, versatility of musical styles and adventurous programming, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is widely regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world. Each spring (prior to COVID), the Orchestra held a black-tie fundraising gala. The year’s theme: magic.

Carolyn began by interviewing a local magician. She used what she learned to develop a lively design solution that was applied to all event materials. The primary visual was a magicians’s wand that — through the magic of a lenticular — morphed into a conductor’s baton.

Event materials were printed in two colors to economize on print expenses. Materials included pre-event awareness materials, the event invitation package, the evening’s program — which even included directions for a magic trick attendees could attempt using their dinner napkin, a salt shaker and a coin — menu, auction catalog cover and event signage.

Close up teaser image of two hands holding an iPad showing an interior page of the EL ICD app, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. for Boston Scientific

EL-ICD iPad App

Six sample pages from Boston Scientific's EL-ICD iPad App, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

When Boston Scientific wanted help creating an iPad app to promote their industry-leading EnduraLife™ implantable cardioverter defibrillator (EL ICD), they called on Carolyn to help.

Boston Scientific’s EL battery technology delivers the longest projected longevity, and is packaged in a device up to 11 percent smaller and 24 percent thinner than devices from other manufacturers. Increased longevity can reduce the risk of infection and other complications over time, minimize out-of-pocket patient expenses for replacement procedures, and decrease healthcare costs associated with device therapy.

The iPad app includes sections on the EnduraLife battery technology, battery performance studies, and device features such as remote monitoring.

A fun feature: the client wanted to include a 360˚ animation of the device. With the swipe of a finger, users could spin the EL device left, right, or all the way around (to look at the device, or just to play). The feature was created using a sequence of product images shot on a turntable at 10˚ increments.

Board Member Retirement Gift

Photo of a custom silk-wrapped case for retiring board member; designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. and printed/constructed by Kent Aldrich of The Nomadic Press.

When Travelers Insurance contacted Carolyn to design a one-of-a-kind gift for a retiring board member, she immediately knew who she wanted to collaborate with: Kent Aldrich of The Nomadic Press.

Travelers’ request was to give the retiring board member a gift he would be proud to display for the rest of his life —but they didn’t know what they wanted the gift to look like or what they wanted it to say. Carolyn presented a number of detailed concept sketches to the Travelers Corporate Communications team. Once a design direction was approved, Carolyn and Kent selected materials, then Kent began the construction process while Carolyn worked with the client to refine content.

The result was a museum-quality piece comprised of a silk-wrapped case, a letterpress printed proclamation embossed with the corporate seal, and a hard-cover book that outlined notable milestones during the board member’s 17-year tenure. The proclamation, book, and case were crafted of the highest quality materials: hand-marbled paper, silk, leather, and aluminum.

Fun fact: The team at Travelers reached out to Carolyn because Carolyn and Kent had collaborated years earlier on a similar type of bespoke proclamation. That proclamation had been presented to Nelson Mandela on behalf of a coalition of Minnesota businesses.

Close up teaser image of hand holding membership brochure, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. for the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society

Historical Society Membership Brochure

Collage of pages from White Bear Lake Historical Society's membership brochure, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

When the executive director of the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society expressed interest in creating a membership brochure, Carolyn jumped at the opportunity to help. Carolyn was given carte blanche to propose a design solution that articulated their mission, engaged the community, and encouraged membership.

When Carolyn presented the proposed design, she included three paragraphs of text she drafted to show tone and content. The client loved Carolyn’s copy so much the draft was used with only a few small revisions.

The Historical Society provided century-old images from the archive. The design includes an innovative roll-fold self-mailer that included a few surprises, including a perf-off reply card and a postcard members could use to send a hand-written note.

The brochure was a Silver Award winner in Neenah Paper’s Text and Cover competition.

Close up teaser image of Louise Dillery and the headline "19 months ni quarantine" promoting interview conducted by Carolyn Porter regarding Louise Dillery's tuberculosis quarantine.

Essay: 19 Months in Quarantine

In the early days of the COVID pandemic, Carolyn had the honor of interviewing 94-year-old Louise Dillery about her 19 months in tuberculosis quarantine. She assembled Louise’s recollections of laughter, friendship and access to a luxurious new diversion — the television — into a short essay. Carolyn’s hope was that Louise’s resiliency and ability to adapt would provide inspiration for people struggling with COVID-related stay-at-home orders.

“I’m bored.” Louise spells out the word for emphasis as she laughs: “B–O–R–E–D.” The remark does not come across as a complaint, just a statement of fact.

Louise Dillery is 94 years old. She understands why she can’t have in-person visitors or go out and get her hair done. She doesn’t feel compelled to break the rules. She knows the stakes of COVID-19 and what it will take to get through this. This is, after all, not the first time she’s been forced to stay inside: nearly seven decades ago, Louise spent 19 months quarantined inside St. Paul’s Ancker Hospital…”

Close up teaser image of cover of ImageReady iPad App, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc. for Boston Scientific

ImageReady iPad App

Eight sample pages from Boston Scientific's ImageReady iPad App, designed by graphic designer Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

When Boston Scientific wanted to develop a tool sales reps could use to educate physicians about the ImageReady line of MR-compatible devices they called on Carolyn to help.

The ImageReady™ iPad app was designed to help Boston Scientific sales reps tell the story of the Ingevity™ pacing lead and the Accolade™ and Essentio™ pacemakers. These pacemakers safely tolerate full-body 1.5T and 3T MRI environments—a solution that offers remarkable flexibility for patients, cardiologists and radiologists.

An additional goal of this app was to tell the story of features beyond MRI compatibility, including automatic daily performance monitoring and respiration-based pacing. The pages outlining those features incorporated animation to help the reader engage with content. A series of videos highlighted options for implant: stylet selection, lead introducer selection, and lead positioning.

Teaser image showing glyph connection points from article in Smashing Magazine written by Carolyn Porter

Article for Smashing Magazine

After reading the book Marcel’s Letters, an editor at Smashing magazine asked Carolyn if she would write an article on designing type for the online magazine.

“Let’s say you found a beautiful old handwriting specimen you want to digitize. You might presume you can trace individual letters, then seamlessly convert those tracings into a font. I will confess that was my assumption before I began to work on my first font,” Carolyn wrote in the article. “I had not taken into account the myriad of thoughtful and intentional decisions required to transform the specimen into an artful and functional font.”

The article was written with a first time-font designer in mind. Before jumping in to the design, Carolyn suggested someone begin by assessing the importance of historical accuracy. Then, the designer should conduct a close examination of the specimen by looking at the idiosyncrasies in the handwriting, the variation in shape and position of individual letters, the method for connecting letters, and the texture. Possessing a keen familiarity of the specimen will allow the designer to make informed decisions about aesthetics.

Close up teaser image showing a large "30" created for Ideal Printers to celebrate their 30th anniversary, designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

Anniversary Identity

Image showing Ideal Printers original logo, and the 30 Year anniversary logo designed by Carolyn Porter of Porterfolio, Inc.

When Ideal Printers, Inc. wanted a variation of their logo they could use to celebrate and promote their 30th year of providing high-quality commercial printing, they called on Carolyn to help.

As Carolyn assessed the typography in Ideal’s decades-old logo, she pointed out technical inconsistencies in weight and scale. She also tactfully pointed out that shapes in the original logo — the letter a in particular — gave the logo a dated look. The end result? Both the refreshed corporate logo and the 30th anniversary logo respect the heritage of the original logo yet offer a decidedly updated look.

In addition to providing vector files of the logos, Carolyn created a two-page cheat sheet for Ideal’s on-staff designers to reference when using the new artwork.
